Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficiency

When households and businesses use less energy to perform the same tasks, everyone benefits from lower costs and less greenhouse gas emissions. The American Association of Blacks in Energy follows 11 guiding principles to support energy efficiency.

Values

AABE recognizes the significance of energy efficiency.

  • We value information and education that helps energy consumers, especially those in low- and fixed-income households and small businesses, improve energy efficiency.
  • We value the participation of historically underserved communities in discussions on national energy efficiency policy.

Supports

AABE helps to inspire the development of programs that support energy efficiency.

  • We support consumer information and education on how to improve the efficient use of energy in practical applications (e.g., buildings, appliances, transportation, electronics).
  • We support affordable energy efficiency implementation strategies that improve the quality of energy utilization within diverse and underserved communities (e.g., “smart” technologies, hybrid/alternative fuel vehicles).

Promotes

AABE works to further the progress of energy efficiency initiatives. We promote partnerships and collaboration in workforce development programs and the creation of business opportunities for minority entrepreneurs and diverse suppliers in public and private domains.

advocates

AABE takes action to create equitable energy efficiency solutions.

  • We advocate for weatherization programs to be funded by federal and state authorities with the appropriate oversight to ensure the needs of underserved communities are fully met.
  • We advocate for expanded federal and state funding for the low-income heat energy assistance program (LIHEAP) with improved metrics for outreach and engagement of underserved communities.
  • We advocate for tax credits, consumption reduction, and other incentives for residential and commercial energy-efficiency investments.
  • We advocate for energy efficiency and conservation block grant (EECBG) funding
for cities and counties with high concentrations of historically underserved individuals.
  • We advocate for research and development funding for energy-efficiency technology and programs.
  • We advocate for the creation of a consumer rate-making process for energy efficiency that provides full and equitable treatment for diverse and underserved communities.
