Climate Change
Climate Change
Long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns are changing the precipitation, the mass of ice at the poles, sea levels, sea water salinity and acidity, and the frequency and severity of extreme events. These shifts may be natural, but the use of fossil fuels in energy production is contributing significantly to the emission of heat-trapping gases. To arrest climate change, the ways and means energy is produced, delivered, and consumed must undergo a massive transition around the globe. The American Association of Blacks in Energy follows 12 guiding principles to prevent climate change.
Values
AABE recognizes the significance of climate change.
- We value holistic and varied solutions that seek to address climate change through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
- We value the participation of historically underserved communities in discussions on climate change policy.
Supports
AABE helps to inspire the development of programs that prevent climate change.
- We support mechanisms to achieve cost-effective reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
- We support cost containment measures designed to minimize financial impact from compliance of greenhouse gas reduction measures on low-income consumers.
- We support the use of cost-effective and commercially viable alternative fuels and the development of infrastructure needed to facilitate the transition to alternative fuel and energy use.
- We support greenhouse gas reduction policies that do not result in net negative impact on jobs, trade balances, and the cost of goods and services over the long term.
- We support greenhouse gas reduction policies that balance the cost of environmental improvements with the benefits of economic development and cleaner air and water.
- We support policies that ensure low- and fixed-income consumers do not shoulder a disproportionate cost as a result of efforts to address greenhouse gas emissions.
- We support consistent greenhouse gas regulatory compliance timetables with timelines for expected development and deployment of needed technologies.
- We support Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards in achieving higher fuel economy and efficiency in vehicles.
Promotes
AABE works to further the progress of climate change initiatives.
We promote partnerships among public and private entities for increasing research, development, and deployment in technologies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, hydrogen energy and fuel technology, conventional hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles, vehicle-to-grid technologies, and electric vehicles.
advocates
AABE takes action to create equitable climate change solutions. We advocate for the inclusion of all sectors of the economy and all sources of greenhouse gas in initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
