Energy and Environmental Justice
Energy and Environmental Justice
Energy and environmental justice involve remediating disparate social, economic, and health burdens of the energy system while ensuring equitable social and economic participation in energy policy and rulemaking. The American Association of Blacks in Energy follows 10 guiding principles to support energy and environmental justice.
Values
AABE recognizes the significance of energy and environmental justice.
- We value a clean and healthy environment in which all people can live, work, and play.
- We value regulatory actions that are based on recognized scientific principles.
- We value the participation of historically underserved communities in discussions on energy and environmental justice.
Supports
AABE helps to inspire the development of programs that advance energy and environmental justice.
- We support sustainable energy production practices that preserve air and water resources throughout the energy lifecycle and reduce air emissions, effluent discharges, and other wastes.
- We support non-residential land use near energy facilities.
Promotes
AABE works to further the progress of distributed power generation initiatives. We promote partnerships and collaboration among public and private entities to increase opportunities for minority entrepreneurs and diverse suppliers.
advocates
AABE takes action to create equitable energy and environmental justice solutions.
- We advocate for energy policy initiatives that strategically and cooperatively engage low-income and disadvantaged communities to address their energy needs while also protecting the environment.
- We advocate for sufficient public investment to reduce vulnerability and improve public health outcomes for members of disadvantaged communities.
- We advocate for facilities associated with energy production to be compliant with all regulations and for industry representatives to work with regulators and community stakeholders to develop effective and economically feasible practices to protect the health and safety of nearby communities.
- We advocate for jobs and supplier opportunities within underserved communities that host energy resources and facilities.
